Tesla’s profitability improves despite slower revenue growth
Tesla’s gross margin increased from 18.0% in the third quarter of 2025 to 19.6% in the latest reporting period.
Total gross profit rose 9% to $5.49 billion despite revenue remaining nearly unchanged.
However, operating expenses increased 39% to $4.78 billion as Tesla continued investing in artificial intelligence, autonomous driving and other technology projects.
The higher spending contributed to a 56% decline in operating income and a 43% reduction in GAAP net income attributable to common stockholders, which reached $787 million.
Automotive revenue declines as services grow
Tesla’s automotive revenue fell 3% from a year earlier to $20.56 billion.
Its energy generation and storage division reported $2.88 billion in revenue, representing a 16% annual decline.
Services and other revenue provided a stronger result, increasing 33% to $4.61 billion.
These differences highlight the changing contribution of Tesla’s business segments as the company expands beyond electric vehicle manufacturing.
Tesla generates $1.53 billion in free cash flow
Tesla generated $6.26 billion in operating cash flow during the quarter.
Capital expenditure reached $4.73 billion, more than doubling from the previous year.
Despite that investment, the company reported positive free cash flow of $1.53 billion.
Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments increased to approximately $45.45 billion.
The earnings report highlights stronger gross profitability and positive cash generation alongside continuing pressure on operating earnings.
Investors will continue monitoring Tesla’s vehicle demand, spending on artificial intelligence and the financial contribution of its expanding software and services businesses.
