INTEL: Switzerland officially approves its first spot Bitcoin ETF for retail investors

Switzerland’s financial regulator has approved the country’s first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) available to retail investors, expanding access to regulated cryptocurrency investment products.

The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) announced the approval on October 20, 2026. The fund will invest directly in Bitcoin and operate under Switzerland’s regulated investment fund framework.

Switzerland Opens Spot Bitcoin ETFs to Retail Investors

The approval allows ordinary investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through a Swiss-regulated investment fund rather than purchasing and storing the cryptocurrency themselves.

Switzerland already offers Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs). However, the newly approved ETF represents the country’s first retail investment fund permitted to invest directly in Bitcoin under this regulatory structure.

FINMA classified the product as an alternative investment fund carrying specific risks. The regulator also granted an exemption from standard diversification requirements because the ETF concentrates its investments in Bitcoin.

Investor Protection and Bitcoin Custody Rules

FINMA requires supervised institutions to address operational and custody risks and clearly disclose the potential for substantial investment losses.

The regulator emphasized that Bitcoin remains highly volatile even when investors access it through regulated financial products.

Other fund providers have also submitted or announced applications for Bitcoin ETFs, potentially expanding Switzerland’s regulated Bitcoin investment market.

The approval marks a new step in bringing Bitcoin investment products into Switzerland’s traditional fund industry.
