INTEL: Shopify and Coinbase build stablecoin payment protocol on Base

Shopify and Coinbase have built a Commerce Payments Protocol on Base, according to Base. The protocol is designed to let merchants accept stablecoins as a payment method.

Base announced that the two companies built the protocol on its network. Its stated purpose is stablecoin acceptance at the point of sale, which would add stablecoins to the payment options a merchant can offer.

What is not yet known

The announcement as relayed gives no launch date, no list of supported stablecoins and no details on how merchants would settle or convert payments. It does not say how many Shopify merchants could use the protocol or whether it is already live. It also gives no fee structure.

This is a developing story. Shopify and Coinbase have not been quoted in the information available here, so the description of the protocol rests on Base’s account alone.
