INTEL: US tells Gulf allies to prepare for renewed Iran campaign after midterms

The United States has told several Gulf Arab allies to prepare for a possible renewed military campaign against Iran after the November midterm elections, the Wall Street Journal reported. Washington has described it as a short, intense operation, according to the report.

The WSJ said US forces are reinforcing missile defenses, restocking ammunition and preparing bombers and fighter jets for potential strikes. Israel is also preparing for renewed strikes, the report said.

Trump leans toward a large strike

According to the WSJ, President Donald Trump is leaning toward a large attack on Iranian nuclear and infrastructure targets after the election. The report said he has not made a final decision.

Trump has also said the US may launch “another little Epic Fury” if Tehran fails to agree to terms. The supplied material does not say what those terms are.

Cost and air defense

The Pentagon has told Congress that the cost of the Iran war rose to $47.1 billion as of October 16. The US is also sending an additional Patriot air defense system to Israel.

The WSJ report rests on its own sourcing. No government has confirmed the timing or scope of any new campaign, and the decision on a strike remains open.
