INTEL: Brazil’s Itaú Unibanco is first bank to formalize crypto trading under new rules
Update (28 Oct 2026): The notification date is now given as Oct. 27, and Itaú is described as the first Brazilian bank to notify the central bank under the new crypto rules.
Itaú Unibanco, Brazil’s largest lender, notified the central bank on Oct. 27 of its crypto trading and custody operations, making it the first Brazilian bank to do so under the country’s new crypto rules. The filing came ahead of the Oct. 30 deadline.
The notification covers two activities: trading of crypto assets and holding them in custody. We first reported the filing as taking place on Tuesday; Oct. 27 is that day.
Because the Oct. 30 deadline has not yet passed, other banks that want to continue or start similar services still have time to make their own notifications. No other bank’s filing has been reported so far.
The step puts Brazil’s biggest bank on record with its regulator for crypto services under the new framework. The reports available do not say which assets Itaú will handle, when the services will be offered to clients, or how the central bank has responded to the notification.
